These smaller structures, composed of gas and young stars, may be the building blocks from which the more familiar spiral and elliptical galaxies formed, possibly through processes such as multiple galaxy collisions. The Hubble observations also showed that the universe in its youth more vigorously manufactured stars than it does today. Over the past 2 months, the Horsehead Nebula has been the focus of my astrophotography attention. The winter weather has set in, with cold nights and frequent cloud cover. Despite these challenges, I have been able to take photos from my backyard on 3 separate occasions in November and December.

Stars and planetary systems are formed from the gas and dust within nebulae. The Orion Nebula is the closest star forming region to Earth, it lies 1,300 light years away and is thought to be around 25 light years across. Nebulae which exist outside the Milky Way are known as extra-galactic nebulae. One of the most identifiable nebulae in the sky, the Horsehead Nebula in Orion, is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud. Also known as Barnard 33, the unusual shape was first discovered on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The red glow originates from hydrogen gas predominantly behind the nebula, ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. Gradually bits of the nebula condense under self-gravitation, resulting in the formation of a few new stars/solar systems. However, let's be clear on scale here. The Horsehead nebula is only 1500 light-years away, which puts it well within our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

It is simple. The Horsehead nebula is not a galaxy on itself, it is merely a small part of a galaxy that is much bigger. There is a difference between the nebula and the galaxy, there is a difference so whenever you hear the word nebula, immediately know that nebula is not a galaxy. The Horsehead Nebula is part of a dense cloud of gas in front of an active star-forming nebula known as IC434. The nebulosity of the Horsehead is believed to be excited by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The streaks in the nebulosity that extend above the Horsehead are likely due to magnetic fields within the nebula.
